The establishment of the National Laboratory for Superconductivity (NLSC) at the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was formally approved by the State Commission of Development & Planning (SCDP) in 1987. The preparations were started in 1988, and in April of 1991, the Laboratory was finally established, accepted and listed as a National Laboratory, which has been officially open to both domestic and foreign researchers. After the joint appraisal and acceptance by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Ministry of Science & Technology, it was honored with a title of the Key National Laboratory in 2000. In 2002, CAS honored it with a title of Model Team. And in 2004,the state Science Department selected it as the plan for the Advanced group of state key laboratory.

The director of the Laboratory is Professor XingJiang Zhou and the chair of the Academic Committee is Professor Zhongxian Zhao.

The NLSC has already established 6 research divisions which are focused on (i) low energy quasiparticle excitations and mixed-state properties of non-conventional superconductors; (ii) Research on the Growth and Physical Properties of High Temperature Superconductors under Micro- and Nano- scale and their heterostructures; (iii) Exploration of Novel Superconductors and Investigations on Related Mechanism of Superconductivity; (iv) Superconductor thin films and devices.; (v) Electronic and Optical Spectroscopy of Novel Superconductors; and (vi) Neutron scattering studies of strongly correlated materials include FeAs-based and copper oxide high-temperature superconductors. Currently, it includes almost all the aspects in the research for the superconductivity

At present ,the lab attaches highly importance to the training of the talented person .Now, it owns an excellent and structure optimized group which includes one academician from the Chinese Academy of Sciences,16 professors ,2 National Outstanding Youth , 2 “One Thousand Talented People” and 5 “One Hundred Talented People” winners of the CAS. Besides, it has plans to recruit the outstanding young researchers in the world in order to add new energy and vitality to the lab.

From its establishment, the NLSC obtained a series of great achievements continuously in the research of the superconductivity with international influence. Such as the NLSC has independently found the superconductivity on the Tc of liquid Nitrogen and first declared that the composition of the superconductor was Ba-Y-Cu-O, which enhanced the research of superconductivity ;Then in the year of 2007 ,the NLSC has developed the world's first VUV (Vacuum Ultraviolet) laser-based photoelectron spectrometer ,with the performances leading the world , to delve into the mysteries of superconductivity in the micro world, and it is also a result of the improving scientific environment in China. Currently, the NLSC has done a good job on the iron based superconductivity. Now the lab almost possesses all the important measurement devices in the superconductivity world, such as the ARPES, STM, DA8, PPMS, MAGLAB , XRD, SQUID and so on .

The Laboratory has become a national center for superconductivity research, a talent incubator and a base for academic exchange among domestic and foreign scholars in this field. It successfully organized the fifth International Conference for Superconductivity Materials & Related Mechanisms(1997), the International Conference on the Mechanism of High Temperature Superconductivity(2001), and the series of Beijing Forum of the Mechanism of High Temperature Superconductivity from 2002, etc. Both training and academic cooperation protocols have been established with such countries and regions as America, Japan, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Russia, Germany, Hong Kong, etc.

The Laboratory is developing into a worldwide influential advanced base for basic and applied research in the field of superconductivity. It will strengthen advanced experimental methods and compete with the strongest group in the world, choose the significant scientific and technologic problems in the field and make deeper research on them. On the other hand, it will also become an educational base for qualified personnel full of innovative ideas and strong motivation, including leading young scientists and qualified post-graduates. It will integrate the needs of the nation to make substantial contributions to the science and technology of superconductivity in China.
